Getting started · Step 2

Setting up your device

Once your radio arrives, getting it onto PalmasMesh takes about fifteen minutes. Here's the whole process, one step at a time.

Before you start: have your phone handy and your new device charged. You don't need a computer for any of this — your phone does all the work.

  1. Charge it and turn it on

When your device arrives, give it a charge over USB first — same kind of cable as most phones. Then power it on. Make sure the antenna is attached before you turn it on; running it without one can damage the radio. If it has a little screen, you'll see it light up.

  2. Install the free Meshtastic app

On your phone, install the free Meshtastic app from your favorite app store. This is the app where you'll actually read and type messages. It's made by the open-source project the whole network runs on — no account, no sign-up.

  3. Connect your phone to the radio

Open the Meshtastic app and let it find your device over Bluetooth, then tap to pair — just like connecting a speaker or headphones. Once they're paired, your phone and the radio talk to each other automatically whenever they're near.

  4. Join PalmasMesh

This is the one step that puts you on our network specifically. We'll give you a single link or QR code to tap — it sets your radio to the right channel and region for Palmas in one go. No typing in numbers by hand. Contact us and we'll send it to you. Or reach out to another member.

  5. Pick your name and say hello

Give your device a friendly name so neighbors know it's you — your first name or your spot in Palmas works well. Then send a quick "hello" to the group. If someone says hi back, you're officially on the mesh.

A few settings worth knowing

The handful of things we'd suggest

The PalmasMesh link in Step 4 sets most of this for you. But if you're curious, here's what those settings are doing in plain terms.

Region: United States
This sets your radio to the legal frequency for Puerto Rico. It has to match the rest of us, or your messages go nowhere.
Channel: PalmasMesh
Think of this like the name of our group chat. Everyone on the same channel shares the same conversation.
A friendly device name
A short name and a four-letter "short code" so neighbors can tell who's who at a glance.
Leave the rest alone
There are a lot of advanced options in the app. You don't need to touch them. If something seems important, ask first — a wrong setting can quietly take you off the network.

If something's not working

The usual suspects

The app won't find my device

Make sure the radio is powered on and close by, and that Bluetooth is turned on in your phone's settings. Turning the radio off and back on clears up most pairing hiccups.

I'm paired but see no neighbors

You may just be out of range of another node, or still need the PalmasMesh settings from Step 4. Send a message anyway — and ask in the community whether anyone hears you.

My messages aren't getting through

Almost always this is the region or channel not matching. Re-tap the PalmasMesh setup link and you should be sorted. Position near a window or up high also helps a lot.
